Imagine that you have worked hard to gain an education, obtained your professional credentials and landed a job in your chosen profession.
Sounds great, right?
Now consider that you are being paid much less than $1,000 per month for that job, that you have little or no support from senior management, that you have not been given the proper tools for carrying out your job, that you are responsible for the well-being of tens or hundreds of poorly trained people, that you are working on a dangerous job site, and that if something goes wrong you are responsible and may very well end up in jail.
Hmm, perhaps not so great!
This is the reality for many of our HSE colleagues that are working in developing countries around the world. These people are working in situations, with responsibilities and accountability that few of us can imagine.
The job sites that they work at may have high rates of injuries and even fatalities, but they persevere, do what they can, perhaps save a life (or several) and help their colleagues return home safely at night.
They are rarely, if ever, given a pat on the back for continuing to carry out their job duties to the best of their ability with the limited resources (if any) that are provided to them.
So, kudos to all of you in that position.
Do what you can with what you have available.
Be proud of your accomplishments - remember that changes happen one step at a time.
